Work starting up to widen Loop 1604.

WorkersĀ began ploppingĀ orange cones into place along Loop 1604 near Randolph AFB and driving inĀ heavy machinery last week.Ā

The job is to widen the road into a four-lane divided highway from FM 78 to Graytown Road by summer 2011, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.Ā Federal stimulus dollars areĀ fundingĀ theĀ $6.63Ā million cost.Ā Ā

“These improvements have been in the works for several years but were unfunded,” TxDOTĀ engineer Frank Holzmann said in a statement. “WithĀ availability of economic stimulus funding,Ā we now have an opportunity to move forward on this.”

But moving forward could be a slow and/or muddy affair for now.Ā The National Weather Service hasĀ forecastĀ rain throughout the week.
